The epidemiological survey of etiologic spectrum of community acquired pneumonia (CAP) in urban adults started recently. It is a program sponsored by the society of infection of the Chinese Society of Respiratory Disease and undertaken by Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University; the program is also cosponsored by the Shanghai Roche Pharmaceutical Ltd. This study will not only serve as an important foundation for the revision of CAP directory in the future, but will also push about the research of infection of the respiratory system in China to get into the international network. It will also facilitate the rational use of antibiotics, and improve the prognosis of CAP, both of which are of important academic value and social influence.

    CAP is a commonly encountered disease of the respiratory system, of which China is still in lack of the reliable data on etiologic spectrum, resulting in a confused situation of the clinical use of the antibiotics. The epidemiology and drug sensitivity test material of CAP pathogens is at present badly needed for specification instruction in the scientific management of CAP.

    Presentations or speeches were delivered during the meeting for the commencement of this program by Professors He Lixian, deputy chief of the group for infection, Chinese society of respiratory disease, person in charge of the program, Qu Jieming of Zhongshan hospital affiliated to Fudan University, Zhang Xiuzhen of Beijing hospital, Chen Yue of Shanghai respiratory disease control center, Ni Yuxing of Ruijin hospital affiliated to the Shanghai Second Medical University and Hu Xinjie of Zhongshan hospital affiliated to Fudan University.

    As was recommended, this epidemiological survey of the CAP pathogen spectrum is for the first time a study of large scale, with the total CAP samples of 900 cases for a period of one year. In this investigation, the two tough problems are the discovery of patients with pneumonia received no antibiotics during the initial visit to the clinic, and the accurate detection of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis causing CAP.
