They believe the gene could be an important new target for research into asthma therapies and may help in asthma screening."This is not the first gene that has been discovered that is associated with asthma but it is the first major one," Steven M. Rauscher, CEO and president of Genome Therapeutics, of Waltham, Massachusetts, said in an interview with Reuters Health. "It appears that 20% to 50% of patients have this gene." In a study sponsored by Schering-Plough Corp., Dr. Stephen Holgate, from the School of Medicine, University of Southampton, UK, collected clinical data and DNA samples from asthma sufferers and their siblings in a large number of families from the United Kingdom. Genome Therapeutics Corp. provided data on families in the United States and did the genetic statistical analysis.Holgate said in a Schering-Plough statement that the gene's discovery "provides an innovative target for therapeutic intervention that has not been previously predicted or characterized by the research community.", http://www.100md.com
