Asleep at the Wheel? Sleep Disorder May Be to Blame

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Many people who get sleepy while driving--increasing the odds of having an accident--have undiagnosed nighttime breathing disorders, new study findings show.

Researchers in Spain found that about 1 out of every 30 drivers regularly felt sleepy while driving on the highway. This corresponds to a 13-fold increase in the risk of a car accident, Dr. Juan F. Masa, of the San Pedro de Alcantara Hospital in Caceres, Spain, and colleagues report in the October issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Compared with more alert drivers, sleepy drivers tended to be overweight, to snore, to have high blood pressure and to be sleepy in the morning. These drivers were also more likely to have sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, in which breathing briefly stops during the night.

Getting prompt treatment for sleep disorders is important for preventing accidents, according to other study findings presented Tuesday at a meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians in San Francisco, California.

In that study, people who were suspected of having a sleep disorder ran a high risk of having a car accident when they had to wait several weeks to see a sleep specialist.

The study included 124 people who were referred to a sleep center for observation due to excessive sleepiness. On average, patients had to wait over a month before being seen at a sleep center. During that time, 5.4% had a car crash, 16.4% almost had a wreck, 16.2% fell asleep behind the wheel and 30.6% fell asleep at work, according to a team of researchers led by Dr. Michel Chalhoub, of the University of Texas at Houston. Also, some of the people were fired or demoted during the waiting period between seeking help and receiving treatment.

Many of these accidents and other problems could have been avoided if the sleeping problems had been diagnosed and treated sooner, according to the researchers.

``The procedure for referring patients, clearance for approval by insurers and scheduling by sleep labs should be streamlined,‘‘ Chalhoub and colleagues conclude.
