Company Finds 6 Proteins Linked to Heart Disease
SALT LAKE CITY (Reuters)-Gene-hunting company Myriad Genetics Inc. on Tuesday said it has discovered six proteins associated with a gene that causes heart disease and will make them targets for medicines the company aims to develop.
The company said the new targets are part of the disease pathway of the so-called CHD1, or Coronary Heart Disease 1, gene and play an important role in the level of HDL, or so-called ``good cholesterol” in the body.
The company said the discovery of the proteins could be important for the prevention of heart disease.
The CHD1 gene associated with the proteins also regulates other genes that help maintain cholesterol levels and other processes for lipid, or fat, metabolism in the body.
``A better understanding of lipid metabolism may lead to a novel class of drugs that have the potential of saving thousands of lives every year in the United States,‘‘ said Sudhir Sahasrabudhe, executive vice president of research and development for Myriad Genetics.
