UK Survey Finds One Third of Hospitals ‘Unhygienic‘
LONDON (Reuters Health) - More than one third of National Health Service hospitals fail to meet basic hygiene standards, according to survey findings reported in the Health Services Journal.
The survey of 699 hospitals was carried out by infection control nurses and patient representatives as part of a government bid to improve hygiene after researchers estimated that 5,000 patients a year die from infections they catch in British hospitals.

The results showed that 250 hospitals had been graded red, indicating that they did not meet basic sanitation standards, 291 had a yellow intermediary grading, and only 158 were green or satisfactory.
According to the journal, which obtained the figures from the Department of Health, the inspections found dirty linen, untidy wards, uncollected rubbish, clinical waste and food trays left out for days.
In an apparent attempt to minimise the publicity impact, a Department of Health spokesperson said the inspection programme was not finished and it was therefore impossible to say what proportion of hospitals failed to meet hygiene standards.

However, the journal‘s editor, Peter Davies, told Reuters Health, ``This is a sample of 699 hospitals. You cannot brush aside its statistical significance. Two out of three of those hospitals have failed their inspections.‘‘
Conservative health spokesman Dr Liam Fox said, ``These findings are a damning indictment of Health Secretary Alan Milburn. NHS wards remain filthy and a danger to the public.‘‘
Hospital managers say the problem reflects decades of cost-cutting in the National Health Service, especially in areas such as cleaning where the impact on patient care is hard to quantify.,
