Hormone Replacement May Protect Against Stroke Damage
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters Health) - Women on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may be less likely to suffer long-term mental damage after having a stroke, new research suggests.
HRT is a well-established protector of bone density after menopause, and research has shown it may cut older women‘s risk of heart disease. Still other--although less clear--evidence suggests that hormone replacement wards off stroke and may preserve memory and other mental abilities that decline with age. Now, results of a study of 137 women suggest HRT lessens the blow a stroke can deal to a person‘s mental functioning.

Among women who had had a first-time stroke, the 17% who had been on HRT before their strokes scored higher than other women on tests of mental functioning. The protective effect of HRT was sustained regardless of age, race, smoking habits and other factors that affect stroke risk.
According to Dr. Robert Harmuth of Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation in Chattanooga, Tennessee, this research provides more evidence that hormone replacement benefits most postmenopausal women.

Harmuth presented his findings Friday at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Just why HRT would affect mental capacity after a stroke is unclear, Harmuth said. However, it has been suggested that estrogen protects memory and other cognitive abilities, he noted.
In the current study, women who had undergone a hysterectomy before their strokes also performed better on mental tests. Harmuth said these women were more likely to be receiving estrogen alone, rather than a combination of estrogen and progestin.
These women also comprised a ``huge percentage‘‘ of those on HRT, Harmuth pointed out. He said the modest number of study patients who had been on HRT was ``appalling.‘‘
Harmuth is currently studying whether estrogen alone or estrogen plus progestin protects women from having a second stroke.,
