The ``G‘‘ Spot May Govern Pleasure And Pain
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A woman‘s erogenous zone may exist for more than mere pleasure. Researchers say evolution may have designed the so-called ``G‘‘ spot to ease the pain of childbirth.

The German obstetrician Dr. Ernst Grafenberg--the ``G‘‘ in G spot--first described the female erotic zone some 50 years ago. Since then, researchers have wondered exactly why, and if, the G spot exists. Some animal research suggested the G spot has a pain-dulling effect, which suggests it has a role beyond pleasure.
Since the early 1980s, Dr. Beverly Whipple and her colleagues have looked at whether this animal research might extend to women. Their work has consistently shown that it does, according to Whipple, of Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey.

``We hypothesize that childbirth would be much more uncomfortable without the G spot,‘‘ she told Reuters Health.
Whipple reported on her research in a recent issue of the Scandinavian Journal of Sexology.
She said that the G spot appears to be at the front of the vaginal wall, near the urethra, the neck of the bladder. In about a dozen studies, Whipple‘s team has found that stimulating this area in women significantly increases their pain threshold. Pressure on the G spot seems to create a natural analgesic that comes into play during childbirth.

Whipple said she found more evidence of this when she studied women in Mexico who enjoyed diets rich in chili peppers. Chili peppers contain a chemical capsaicin, which has been shown in lab rats to dull the pain-killing effects of the G spot.
Whipple said she began noticing that Spanish-speaking women in her area seemed to have particularly tough times during labor. ``At first I assumed it was a cultural difference, and they felt more free to express pain,‘‘ Whipple said.

But the animal research on capsaicin led her to suspect a different culprit: chili peppers. In their study of Mexican women, Whipple and her colleagues found that women who ate diets high in chili peppers did not have their pain thresholds raised when their G spots were stimulated. Capsaicin, she said, appears to destroy particular nerve fibers that are key to the G spot‘s natural pain-blocking effect., http://www.100md.com
