    Report: Obesity A Global Threat

WASHINGTON (AP) - Doctors now regard obesity as a global health threat, saying it has raised the incidence of heart disease, stroke, breast cancer and colon cancer, according to an analysis by an environment research group.

Worldwatch Institute Chairman Lester Brown also said there is growing evidence that cutting down calories is not enough to combat obesity; regular exercise is needed to maintain healthy body weight.

Sedentary lifestyles -watching television, playing computer games and surfing the Internet - are contributing to a surge in obesity, Brown said in a report.

If recent trends continue in the United States, the report said, it is only a matter of time before the 300,000 persons who die each year from obesity-related illnesses overtake the 400,000 who die prematurely from smoking-related diseases.

The report cites Peter Kopelman of the Royal London School of Medicine, who said the medical community believes that "obesity should no longer be regarded simply as a medical problem...but as an epidemic that threatens global well-being."

Worldwatch‘s research shows that the number of those overfed and overweight around the world has climbed to 1.1 billion, rivaling the number of those who are underweight and undernourished.

"For the first time in history, a majority of adults in some societies are overweight," Brown said in his report. "In the United States 61 percent of all adults are overweight. In Russia, the figure is 54 percent. In the United Kingdom 51 percent and in Germany 50 percent.

For Europe as a whole, more than half of those between 35 and 65 years of age are overweight.

The number of those who are overweight in developing countries is rising too, according to the institute‘s research. In Brazil, for example 36 percent of the adult population is overweight. In China, the figure is 15 percent.

"Not only are more people overweight than ever before but their numbers are increasing at a record rate," Brown‘s report said, mainly in cities.

In both China and Indonesia, the share of people who are obese in cities is double that in the countryside, the report said. In the Congo, obesity is six times higher in cities.

Besides contributing to life-threatening diseases, heavier body weight increases the resistance to the heart‘s pumping blood, contributing to high blood pressure. It also raises the stress on joints, often causing lower back pain.

"Unless we can design a lifestyle that systematically restores exercise in our daily routines, the obesity epidemic - and the health deterioration associated with it - will continue to spread," the report said.
