    Abstract

    There is convincing evidence that trefoil factor 1 (TFF1), the first member of the trefoil factor family, plays an important role in the gastrointestinal barrier function and epithelial restitution. TFF1 is involved in gastrointestinal protection, in combination with mucin. TFF1 contributes to the different steps of mucosal restitution, especially the regulation of cell–cell contact and cell migration. Recently, TFF1 has been shown to interfere with crucial biological processes such as cell migration, proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis, and angiogenesis. TFF1 delays the G1-S phase transition of the cell cycle, and reduces gastrointestinal-cell-induced apoptosis ......
