Earlier this year the Servere Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)emerged from Southeastern China. Its clinical manifestations were those of a community acquired pneumonia but one with prominent fever and muscle aches.Because these symptoms are so common it was not immediately obvious that we had a new disease on our hands. As information about SARSbecame available the China Medical Tribune and the New England journal of Medicine both began special efforts to be sure that physicians and other health care professionals were informed of the epidemic.At the New England Journal of Medicine we aggressively sought out two case series,one from Toronto and one from Hong Kong.We worked with authors to obtain clinically useful details such as the specificaspects of case presentation,including an elevated LDH on blood chemistry and an absolute lymphopenia.We also wbtained representative chest radiographs,and provided information on what routine microbiological studies were negative;one of our case reports,the one from Toronto,provided insight into etiology when the authors suggested that either a metapneumonvirus or a novel coronavirus was the causative agent.The clinical course of patients was detailed Within a week we posted a third and larger case series from Hong Kong in which the clinical manifestations of SARS were clearly delineated -the findings from these three reports provides a strong basis for the clinical identification of SARS by physicians and other health care

Within hours of our posting the English language version of our firsts SARS articles,the China,asked for and received permission to print the full test of our SARS articles.Within the next few weeks as we posted articles showing that a novel coronavirus was the most likely etiologic agent in SARS, the China Medical Tribume also published these articles Indeed the Tribune has initiated a regular SARS feature whose goal is to keep health care professionals in China fully informed about all aspects of the SARS epidemic.The Tribune has done an outstanding job in this case and is to be congratulated.
