Pathological significance of expression of intrahepatic smooth muscle fiber in hepatitis B

Abstract
AIM To study the relationship between expressions of intrahepatic vascular smooth-muscle fibers and hepatitis B.
METHODS Immunohistochemical (S-P method) staining was performed with α-SMA, ⅧR Ag and FN, LN, Co-Ⅳ in 384 cases of liver biopsies of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and 10 cases of normal liver biopsies.
RESULTS There were focal, band, bridge, cicartrix, sinusoidal wall figures of the expressions of smooth muscle fiber on liver tissue of CHB. And the degrees of their expressions were related with the grading (G) of CHB (P<0.01). Strongly positive expressions / positive expressions in G1-2, G3, G4 and liver cirrhosis (LC) groups were respectively 25%/75%, 90%/10%, 97%/3% and 99%/1%; they were also related with the staging of CHB (P<0.01). Most of the smooth-muscle fibers were strongly positively expressed in group of higher value liver fibrosis (LF), while most positively expressed in lower value group. ......
