    Effect of vitamin A on hepatic cirrhosis in patientswith chronic alcoholic liver disease

    Abstract

    AIM:
To prove the inhibitoryeffect of vitamin A (Vit A) on the formation of liver fibrosis in patientswith chronic alcoholic liver disease (ALD).

    

    METHODS:
Fiftypatients were assigned into Vit A and Huganpian treatment group(controls). After corresponding treatment for 6, 12 and 18 mo, the levelsof serum procollagen Ⅲpeptide (PⅢP)and hyaluronic acid (HA) were detected by enzyme linked immunosorbentassay (ELISA).

    

    RESULTS:
After18 mo of the Vit A treatment, the levels of PⅢP(16.9 ± 6.8 mg/Lvs 28.2 ± 9.7 mg/L)and HA (132.3 ± 71 mg/Lvs 210.0 ± 87 mg/L)were significantly decreased as compared with those before the treatment(both P < 0.01), and there was also significant differencebetween the treatment group and the control group (PⅢP:16.9 ± 6.8 mg/Lvs 23.6 ± 9.6 mg/L,P < 0.01; HA: 132.3 ± 71 mg/Lvs 192.0 ± 97 mg/L,P < 0.05).

    CONCLUSION: Vit A cansuppress hepatic fibrogenesis of ALD patients, and the mechanism may berelated to its inhibition on the release of collagen ......
