Vice chief Chen Dinzhang of department of ultrasound diagnosis of Xijing Hospital, the Fourth Military Medical University completed a study recently proving that long periods of hypoxia in plateau area may lead to a high incidence of excessively long umbilical cord and the occurrence of cord around the neck. This achievement is of highly important instructive significance for the diagnosis and prognosis of perinatal infants in the highland gravida.

It was considered by the researchers that a too frequent fetal movement was caused by hypoxia in the highland which was also an important cause for the high incidence of cord around the neck. Additionally, this was also the reason of having a longer fetal umbilical cord in the highland than that in the inner land regions. Therefore, it was reminded that a routine B ultrasound scan must be carried out for gravida of more than 34 weeks for the discovery of cord around the neck during the antepartum period. Reinforced custodial care of labor must be emphasized clinically. Fetal distress in uterus must be timely detected and appropriate selection of mode of delivery instated for the safety of the mother and the infant., 百拇医药
