Program for eradicating measles shows marked advan
For the realization of the goal proposed by WHO to eliminate measles, Heilongjiang province formulated and seriously carried out the strategy to eliminate measles; up to the end of 2000, the provincial incidence of measles declined to 0.12/100000 without a single mortality. Heilongjiang claimed to be the province with the lowest incidence of measles throughout the country. Recently, the province was considered by the related national departments to be the first grade area of measles control.
The incidence of measles in Heilongjiang province was considerably high; during 1949-1965, the annual incidence and fatality rate were respectively 725.11/100000 and 19.27/100000. Following the practice of attenuated live measles virus vaccine since 1966, the incidence descended year by year; however, the epidemiological condition was still serious. The program of immunization carried out since 1983, resulted in a remarkable decrease of the incidence and fatality rate. The reported cases of measles in 1980-1988 numbered 79,490, and the annual incidence was 12.16/100000 with a fatality rate decreased to 0.02/100000.
