China establishes high level national database
To preserve and to share the important biomedical resources of the country, i.e. the knowledge in virology, bacteriology, cytology and human genetics are the urgent tasks in fundamental scientific technology in China today for prevention and treatment of major diseases and the development of pharmaceutical industry. With the financial support from the department of technology for special purpose of fundamental study the national "10th -5-year plan" focal point project of scientific research entitled "The preservation and sharing of state important biomedical resources" started up recently. The project was undertaken by the Institute of Prevention and Control of Virus Disease of the Chinese Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) with Dr. Liang Guodong taking the responsibility. A large number of scientific research institutions of the state level joined as members of this group, they were the Institute of infectious disease prevention and control of CDC, Institute of Basic Medical Research of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS), Institute of Genetics of Chinese Academy of Science (CAS), Institute of Biological Chemistry and Cellular Biology, State Focal Point Laboratory of Medical Genetics of the Central Southern University, Institute of Experimental Animals of CAMS etc..

Important biomedical resources are themselves the essential wealth of the country. As a big country of multiple nationalities and vast territory, China possesses numerous superfine and peculiar medical microbial resources and extremely precious natural resources of human genetics. Following decades of efforts, biomedical resource database of smaller scales had already been established in some of the major scientific research institutions of the state level. However, due to the lack of enough fund and limitations of condition as well as the problems of administration, the present status of preservation and the quantity of preserved resources are of small amount; the formation of a biomedical preservation base of operation of the state level with genuine significance has not yet been a reality. Understandably, along with the economical and social progress, the value of preservation with the potentiality of these resources in the development of scientific research as well as the practical value are continuously increasing. The preservation and mutual sharing of these resources play an important role not able to be replaced in the progress of scientific technology and social development. For this purpose, this project had been listed in the "10-5" focal point item with the cooperation of scientists of multiple disciplines and hands firmly joined together for the establishment of the medical biological resource database of the state level., http://www.100md.com
