     Expression of EGF, TGFα and EGFR mRNA in human hepatocellular carcinoma

    【Abstract】 AIM: To investigate the roles of epidermal growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factorα(TGFα) and EGF receptor (EGFR) in the occurrence and development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: Reverse transcriptionpolymerase chain reaction (RTPCR) was employed. RESULTS: The positivity rate of EGF in HCC, pericancerous and normal liver tissues was 95.0%, 91.7% and 37.5%, respectively, and the positivity rate of TGFα was 85.0%, 83.3% and 25.0%, respectively, whereas the positivity rate of EGFR was 95.0%, 100% and 50.0% respectively. EGF and EGFR had a higher expression level in HCC than TGFα. CONCLUSION: The autocrine system of EGF/EGFR and /or TGFα/EGFR exists in HCC, but the EGF/EGFR system may play a more important role in the proliferation and differentiation of HCC.
