     Effects of swelling in polymethyl methacrylate frame of prostheses on adhesive properties of swollen polymethyl methacrylate frame and SY1 silicone elastomer

    【Abstract】 AIM: To evaluate the effects of swelling in polymethyl methacrylate frame of prostheses on adhesive properties of swollen polymethyl methacrylate frame and SY1 silicone elastomer. METHODS: The tension strength and peeling strength between polymethyl methacrylate and SY1 silicone elastomer were tested before and after swelling in polymethyl methacrylate frame. RESULTS: After the surfaces of the polymethyl methacrylate frame were swelled by liquid denture acrylic, their adhesive strength with SY1 silicone elastomer decreased obviously. The tension strength before swelling (0.98±0.04) was stronger than that after swelling (0.53±0.04) (P<0.01), and the peeling strength before swelling (0.70±0.03) was stronger than that after swelling (0.33±0.03) ( P<0.01). CONCLUSION: The adhesive strength between polymethyl methacrylate and SY1 silicone elastomer becomes weaker after the swelling of the surface of polymethyl methacrylate. ......
