【Abstract】 AIM: To observe the morphological changes of vestibular organs and to detect the calcium content of otoconia in rats after simulated weightlessness. METHODS: The changes of vestibular organs were investigated with scanning electron microscopy and in a model of simulated weightlessness by tailsuspension, and an Xray microanalysis was conducted. RESULTS: The vestibular otoconia became small, round and irregular in shape or with fissures and were loosely arranged in rats after 160day suspension in simulated weightlessness. The calcium content of otoconia markedly decreased(P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Decreasing bone formation may be the main reason for the reducing calcium content in the otoconia. The headward distribution of blood volume may account for the morphological changes in the middle ear and inner ear. ......
