Callicarpa macrophylla Vahl (bigleaf beautyberry) is an evergreen shrub that grows to about 2.5 m high. The whole plant is covered with greyish white furfuraceous long setae. It has oblong simple leaves 15 to 25 cm in length with serrate edges. Axillary cymes come out in summer with purple corollas. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). It has round fruits as big as mung beans which become purplish red when they ripen, so it is also known as the "purple beads". The plant can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.

Callicarpa nudiflora Hook. et Arn. (nakedflower beautyberry) is similar in shape to Callicarpa macrophylla Vahl (bigleaf beautyberry), but its old stems are bare and bald and there are lenticels on them. It has smaller leaves with less hair, whose faces turn brown after drying and the cymes have shorter stalks.
