The perennial climber grows to about 6 m at a fast rate. It has sharply lobed leaves, forked tendrils, clusters of five-petaled white flowers that are borne at the ends of long stalks that arise from the leaf axils, and clusters of oval, prickly, single-seeded fruits. It is in flower from July to September. The flowers are monoecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but both sexes can be found on the same plant) and are pollinated by insects. The plant cannot grow in the shade. It requires moist soil.

    Modern Researches:

This herb contains triterpenoid saponins, organic acids and their salts, resins, saccharides and pigments. The seed contains fatty oil, saponins, etc. Trichosanthes fruit peel contains a variety of amino acids and alkaloids.

Both the saponins contained and the total amino acids in the peel have expectorant effects and they can also reduce blood fat.

The peel of the fruit is used to treat a number of ailments, including cancer, jaundice, retained placenta, bronchial infections with thick phlegm and sore throat.

Trichosanthes fruit seed has a purgative effect.

The fruit can inhibit Staphylococcus aureus, Diplococcus pneumoniae, hemolytic streptococcus, Bacillus pyocyaneus, Bacillus influenzae, Bacillus dysenteriae, B. typhi, B. paratyphi, E. coli, pseudomonas, Vibrio cholerae, V. proteus, etc. The fruit is traditionally prepared as a winter soup to ward off colds and influenza.

The fresh root has been noted for centuries as an abortifacient--a sponge soaked in its juice was placed in the vagina and induced an abortion in the second trimester of pregnancy. The root is taken internally in the treatment of diabetes, dry coughs, and to assist in the second stage of labour.

The root and/or the seed is powdered and used in the treatment of mammary cancer.

According to 'Encyclopaedia of Herbs and their Uses' (Dorling Kindersley, London, 1995), recent research has isolated a protein called 'trichosanthin' in the roots and this is undergoing trials as a possible remedy for AIDS., 百拇医药
