ABSTRACT: Objective To investigate the correlation between pathological results and ureteroscopic results of transitional cell cancer of upper urinary tract so that a possible relationship between ureteroscopic biopsy and operative pathology could be postulated. Methods Specimens from 35 patients with transitional cell cancer of upper urinary tract, ureteroscopically examined and biopsized, were resected and pathologically examined. All specimens were staged and graded according to WHO criteria. Results In 22 cases with Ⅱ or lower bioptic degree, 2 had Ⅲ or higher postoperative histological degree. In the 9 cases with higher than Ⅱ bioptic degree, 7 were verified Ⅲ or higher. Of the 22 biopsy specimens with Ⅱ or lower degree, only 1 presented pT2 and pT3, whereas 6 of 9 specimens with Ⅱ or higher degree showed muscle and parenchyma invasion. Conclusion Ureteroscopic biopsy of upper urinary tract transitional cell cancer can guarantee accurate grading. ......
