因此，理解分裂在沙盘中的表现和意义是非常重要的——分裂呈现的同时也就意味着整合的可能。有经验的沙盘治疗师都知道，初始沙盘中除了呈现来访者的问题，往往也会包含着治愈的线索，就像炼金术从毒药中提取解药，看到并理解了这一点，也就找到了一条帮助BPD病人痊愈的路。
另外，BPD的其他防御机制在沙盘中也都或多或少地会有所体现，比如奇异呈现可能是理想化的一种表示，创伤主题可能同时是贬低化的反映，但都不像分裂这样明显和直接，对这些今后将进一步进行研究。
