From 2002, a large number of artists' studios andcontemporary art institutions started to come intothe area. They rented and changed the idle factorybuildings and developed these buildings intoart galleries, artistic centres, artists' studios, designcompanies, fashion shops, restaurants andbars, and zones of concentration for various purposes,making this area grow within two yearsinto the largest domestic Chinese arts area,with the greatest international influence. Whilethe original historical and cultural relics are stillprotected, the former factory buildings are rede-fined, redesigned and renovated, bringing newdefinitions to the buildings and lifestyles.
