     The best guess seems to be that the Stonehengesite was begun by the people of thelate Neolithic period (around 3000 BC) andcarried forward by people from a new economywhich was arising at this time. These"new" people (though they were not reallynewcomers), called Beaker Folk because oftheir use of pottery drinking vessels, began touse metal implements and to live in a morecommunal fashion than their ancestors.

    Stonehenge's original purpose is unclearto us, but some have speculated that it wasa temple made for the worship of ancientearth deities. It has been called an astronomicalobservatory for marking significantevents on the prehistoric calendar. Othersclaim that it was a sacred site for the burialof high-ranking citizens from the societiesof long ago.

    While we can't say with any degree of certaintywhat it was for, we can say that itwasn't constructed for any casual purpose.Only something very important to the ancientswould have been worth the effortand investment that it took to constructStonehenge.
