The city that would become New York began when Henry Hudson, an English explorer hired by the Dutch, discovered Manhattan Island in 1609 while searching for a quicker route to the Orient. Fifteen years later, the area was claimed by the Dutch, who established a colony there named New Amsterdam. The colony welcomed people from different nations who were willing to work. By the 1640s, there were 18 different languages spoken in New York.
