    Varanasi is located on the banks of the river Ganges in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Also known as Banares, or Benares, Varanasi is a sacred Hindu city and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The city has been an important cultural and religious center in northern India for thousands of years, dating back to the time of ancient Sumeria.American writer Mark Twain described the city as being "older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend…" Many distinguished Indian writers, poets, musicians, and philosophers have hailed from Varanasi. Siddharta Guatama, also known as the Buddha, is said to have given his first sermon at Sarnath, located only several miles away from Varanasi. The city's unique culture, ancient temples, and Ghats situated near the River Ganges have made it a popular destination for travelers in India.
