Floodwaters Devastate South Asia
南亚遭受严重水灾
Torrential rains accompanying the region's annual monsoon season have brought about severe flooding in South Asia, killing hundreds of people and leaving millions homeless. Large areas of northern India, Bangladesh, and Nepal have been submerged in water. Residents of some affected areas are calling the flood the worst in living memory. The heavy rains are linked to the yearly Asian Monsoon, the seasonal reversal of wind that carries moisture from the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean over the South Asian land mass. Although the monsoon is a predictable event, rainfall in the region this year has been unusually heavy. Floodwaters have breached embankments and dykes, submerging huge tracts of land and killing large numbers of livestock. In India, more than 12 million people have been left homeless in the most heavily-affected regions of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Assam. Bangladesh has seen about 5 million people displaced and more than 750,000 people in Nepal have also been affected by the rains. Government figures place the total number of people killed by the waters so far at over 1,000. Officials also fear that the threat of hunger and disease are putting hundreds of thousands more people at risk. Food, clean drinking water, and medical aid are desperately needed in the affected areas, but relief efforts so far have been slow and insufficient. The floodwaters have destroyed many important roads and bridges, impeding the movement of much-needed relief material. In India, the military has been called in to join relief operations but inadequate food supplies has led desperate victims to clash with police in relief camps in Assam. Although the weather seems to be improving, the situation looks grim for the near future. (Sources: BBC, CNN) ......
