With the exception of the odd Mountain Bike or Road Bike, your average Chinese commuter rides a single speed 26x13/8 or 28 inch upright, which can be bought for as little as 70 kuai RMB (approx. 10 CAD). The common feeling amongst Chinese is that anything nicer will just get stolen… which isn't completely false. Bike theft in Beijing is rampant, just as it is in Toronto. For this reason, I also had to bring my own lock from Canada. In fact, people in Canada will spend as much as a hundred dollars (700 Yuan) for a good quality lock. Luckily in Canada, we are provided with a "post-and-ring" style locking stand, which, if locked correctly, provides ample security. This level of theft prevention is untenable for most in Beijing.
