After his retirement, Ali devoted himself to religion, charity, and world peace. He was praised by the American people for his efforts. Due to the 29,000 or so strikes received to the head while boxing, Ali developed Parkinson's disease. In 1996, he was chosen to light the cauldron during the Opening Ceremony of the Atlanta Olympics. He has devoted much of his life to humanitarian affairs. In 1998, Ali was honored with the United Nations Messenger of Peace Award.
