They say an army marches on its stomach, but according to a recent report the German military may be taking the phrase a little too literally.

    A fondness for stodgy food, a lack of exercise and a penchant for smoking are all to blame for rising poor standards of fitness among German soldiers. "The men are too fat, don't do enough exercise, and don't pay attention to what they eat" wrote Reinholde Robbe, the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Military in his report to the Parliament in Berlin.
