    In 1961, President Kennedy decided that the time had come to invade Cuba. In years previous, the CIA had trained a force of Cuban exiles and anti-Castro demonstrators (many of whom had fled after Batista's regime was defeated) and on April 15th, 1961, this makeshift army attempted to invade Cuba by landing in the Bay of Pigs, on the south-western shore of the island.
