Millions of people across China ride their bicycles every day. So, when the Olympics come to Beijing this summer, it almost feels like cycling is coming home. The question is now whether China can convert this obvious enthusiasm for two wheels into a haul of medals in Beijing.

    The story of the modern bicycle actually began in 1817 when Baron von Drais, a wealthy German landowner, created a running machine to move quickly around his forests. Pedals were added to turn the wheels that powered the machine, but this early form of the bicycle was so difficult to ride that it was widely known as the "The Boneshaker"!
