Global financial institutions were in turmoil this month, after the failure of one of the largest and most prestigious American banking firms, Lehman Brothers, on September 15th, and the near-collapse of several other Wall Street institutions, including the famous Merrill Lynch. Until the last minute, it was believed that a buyout would be organized for Lehman Brothers, but no other company was willing to step up.
