    Although the organizers charged money for tickets, all proceeds were donated to charity, and almost all the acts performed for free. The variety of music was incredible, from the sitar of Indian maestro Ravi Shankar, to jazz, blues, pop, and rock. One criticism was the lack of black artists; although several had been invited, Jimi Hendrix was the only major black performer to attend.The festival was a huge success, sparking a wave of imitators in the next few years, and unlike many subsequent events was also very well organised and managed – although the hallucinogenic drug LSD was widely used, under the name of "Monterey Purple", setting a pattern of heavy drug use that would continue throughout festivals to come.
