新亭对泣

【出处】南朝宋·刘义庆《世说新语·言语》：“过江诸人，每至美日，辄相邀新亭，藉卉饮宴。周侯中坐而叹曰：“风景不殊，正自有山河之异。”
【Interpretation】Used to describe a person longing for the motherland， with his country conquered and family ruined.
【释意】常用来比喻在国破家亡时对故国的思念。
During the Jin Dynasty (265-420)，the Xiongnu (an ancient nationality in China) army invaded the central plains and launched the “Rebellion of Five Huns” in the Chinese history. At this time， large quantities of rich families and celebrities in the north followed Wang Dao (276-339) toward south to Jiankang (now Nanjing)， in order to flee from the war.
晋时，入侵中原的胡人以匈奴族刘渊为首，发动了史称“五胡之乱”的入侵，大批北方名士和士族为躲避战乱，跟随王导，南下来到建康。
These celebrities from the north often gathered at Xinting， a suburban area in Jiankang， whenever they got homesick. One day， one of them sighed with emotion and said， “The scenery here and that of Luoyang are much alike； however， the mountains and the rivers have changed when I take a broad view.”
这些士大夫经常在想家时来到建康西南郊区的新亭江边聚会，有一次周在饮宴时感慨道：“这里的风景和洛阳很相似，放眼望去只是山河改换了。”
The words evoked everyone’s home sick， and their eyes were shadowed with tears. At that moment， Wang Dao spoke out and advised that they should work together to assist the court in getting back the lost land instead of weeping face to face like prisoners.
这一说勾起了大家对故土的思念之情，众人不禁黯然落泪，王导站出来说道：“我们应该一起努力，辅佐皇室收复故土，怎么能像囚犯一样相对而泣呢!”
Later， Wang Dao united the powers from the north and the south and successfully consolidated the rule of the Dong Jin Dynasty in the south. He himself became the prime minister and gained much reputation.
后来，王导率领南迁的北方士族，联合江南士族，稳定了东晋在南方的统治，成为东晋重臣，名噪一时。, http://www.100md.com
