Return to Hometown in Gorgeous Clothes

【Interpretation】 To come back to one’s hometown in gorgeous clothes after becoming rich and powerful， which
implies showing off in front of the villagers.
【释意】指富贵以后穿着华丽的衣服回到故乡，含有向乡里夸耀的意思。
During the Southern Dynasties (420-589)， there was a courtier called Liu Zhilin (478-549). He was so smart， studious and talented at a young age that he got appreciated by the aristocratic officials. During his appointment in Jinzhou， he collected several hundred kinds of ancient artifacts， making him a big collector.
南朝梁时有位大臣叫刘之遴，少年时就聪明好学很有才气，受到高官贵族的赏识，他在荆州任职时，曾收集古器数百种，是个大收藏家。
When the imperial prince received a book The History of the Han Dynasty by Ban Gu (32-92)， the famous historian and litterateur in the Dong Han Dynasty (25-220)， he enlisted Liu Zhilin to the proofreading team. Liu Zhilin read the book very carefully and found dozens of errors， which was praised by the scholars of the time.
当有人得到班固的《汉书》献给皇太子时，太子让他参与校对。刘之遴看《汉书》时一丝不苟，核对出数十处不同点，为当时学者所称道。
Liu Zhilin was so talented and outstanding that he was doted on by the emperor. One day， the emperor said to him with concern， “Your mother is old. Why don’t you go back to visit your families and relatives？ Wear the clothes that demonstrate your high status and bring honors to your ancestors. Go!”
刘之遴才学出众，深得梁武帝的宠爱，有一天，梁武帝十分关切地对他说：“你母亲年纪大了，你穿着能显示身份的衣服回家探亲，光宗耀祖去吧。”
Just as expected， when Liu Zhilin returned to his hometown in gorgeous clothes， he received a warm welcome from his countrymen. Liu Zhilin felt proud of it. Ever since then， returning to hometown in gorgeous clothes got a meaning of coming back to hometown after achieving success and fame.
果然，刘之遴穿着华服回到家乡之后，受到家乡父老的热烈欢迎，十分得意。从此“衣锦还乡”便有了“功成名就之后回到家乡”的意思。, 百拇医药
