Piyush Gupta, "Essential Pediatric Nursing" Author: Piyush Gupta. Publishers: A.P. Jain & Co. Delhi, 2004, pp.536. Rs. 295/-.

The book, primarily addressed to undergraduate nursing students, has 30 chapters beginning with concept of Pediatric Nursing. This is followed by care of normal and high risk newborn, growth and development of children through the different stages with a special chapter on adolescent child and school health. This is followed by feeding of healthy children, nutritional disorders, care of communicable diseases and approach to management of a sick child. Behavior problems, welfare of children and pediatric nursing procedures are also covered.

The presentation of the book is good and easy to read. Each chapter begins with a list of objectives and glossary of important terms. The headings throughout the book are highlighted in a different color with plenty of illustrations, pictures, diagrams and boxes to reveal important information.

The chapters on disorders of various systems and organs have a typically medical orientation and have been covered in a very simple manner. The nursing care of the patient discusses interventions important from the medical point of view. The nursing process approach, although introduced as a concept in the first chapter has not been universally followed in describing the nursing management of various disorders. The book can serve as a useful, ready reference/handbook of pediatrics for general nursing students.

This CD follows a workshop on Practical Procedures in Pediatric Emergencies held at Kanchi Kamakoti Childs Trust Hospital at Chennai in October 2004. The CD has various sections like Lumbar punctures and CSF opening pressure, Peripheral IV, External Jugular cannulation, nasogastric tube insertion, Foley catheterization, Peritoneal dialysis catheter, Intraossseous needle insertion, chest tube insertion. The CD would be of immense benefit to pediatricians and residents in almost all settings ranging from peripheral health facilities to large teaching institutions. Visual aids in the CD with detailed descriptions will give enough confidence to residents and postgraduates to carry out the procedures on their own. The reasonably priced CD is certainly a valuable aid in pediatric emergencies.
